centuries in China, has caught on like fire with the Western
world in the recent past. Besides the tomes written
on this topic, a variety of courses are available –
both online and offline, plus one can find a horde of
expert Feng Shui consultants. This rage has even caught on
with celebrities like Sting and Kelly Brook who have
had their homes ‘feng shui-ed’. Let’s find
out what makes this ‘Chinese art of placement’
so popular.
WHAT
IS FENG SHUI?
Feng (pronounced as “fung) means “the way
of the wind” and Shui (pronounced as shway) means “water”
or "the natural forces of the universe”,
is the ancient Chinese art of positioning objects, buildings,
furniture or even graves to create an environment that
is in balance. The Chinese have used this method for centuries
to build homes, offices, to design cities and tombs
for the dead.
HOW IS IT BENEFICIAL?
The main aim of Feng Shui is to create positive energy
and maintain a balanced environment. It is believed to reduce
insomnia, enhance health in general, make you prosperous,
ease family conflicts, and enhance financial security and
plenty of other life upgrading boons.
HOW TO USE FENG
SHUI FOR YOUR HOME
Here are a few ways you can make use of Feng Shui for
your home:
Entrance Ways:
Ensure that the front to the back of your home is not hindered,
as the entrance is considered the most auspicious.
It is at the entrance one may pause upon entering or leaving
the home, thus being energized by the Chi that flows
through it.
Bedroom: Adults should have their
bedrooms facing the west to let in the gentle rays of the
setting sun, whereas for children benefit from a bedroom
facing the east towards the invigorating morning rays.
Bathroom: A north-facing bathroom
is ideal as the direction is associated with water. Blue
and Black are preferred colors also due to their significance
to water.
Dining Room: A dining room that
has two doors, which are not opposite to each other, is
preferred. This will ensure the flow of chi is gentle
and not static.
Kitchen: Kitchens ideally should
not face the North, as the Chinese believe that malevolent
spirits come from the North. An effective cure would
be to hang wind chimes or crystals from windows or doors
that face the north.
